The mikveh

During the renovation works of Villa Bahia between 2004 and 2006, a set of baths covered with Portuguese tiles was discovered under the rubble. Research is currently underway, but everything indicates that they could be Jewish purification baths, built and used clandestinely by the Marranos (converted Jews) during the Inquisition period.

Discover the history of Villa Bahia

The hotel project of the two colonial mansions began in 2004 and was inaugurated in 2006. Before that, the houses hosted various activities, including a haberdashery, a consulate, a jeweler, a military recruitment center, and even a funeral home. The oldest of the houses was built starting in 1680 and belonged to a wealthy sugar cane trader, who was also the administrator of the Franciscan order, which still neighbors the property.
